this resulted in a fairly significant increase on my machine (486
DX4-100 running Linux 1.2.11)

stats:

w/o optimizations: 
17 minutes and 45 seconds per segment, 15800 keys per second .

w/ opts:
16 minutes and 56 seconds per segment, 16500 keys per second.
